  1. I lived in an apartment in NY, and the walls were so thin I could hear the people snoring in the next apartment. One day, I was down in the Village near the Bowery, and this guy had huge stacks of books for sale. He was selling them $5 a yard. I wound up buying about $300 of books from him and built bookshelves covering the entire connecting wall of the bedroom and filled them with those books. Incredibly good sound insulation, and it made me look smart too.

  2. Living in an apartment in Japan was amazing. Concrete construction with double paned windows and split A/C units mounted externally on vibration-isolating pads. The unit layouts were smart, too. Like a main door with a thick gasket, leading to the entry area, where you could take off your shoes, the kitchen and bathroom, then a second door to the living and bedroom area. I only ever heard the faintest noise of neighbors in the hall when I was in the kitchen area.

  3. Water Buffalo!? You are lucky. We had the Dutch/Austrian parents with five kids above us. The older kids were into competitive clog racing and trained on the hardwood floors. The younger kids were being groomed for the Austrian National Yodeler Team. I’m sure all their kids did well and earned medals due to their devotion to their sports.

  4. In my case, the water buffalo live below me. Or next door.

I can’t even tell anymore and I don’t know how it’s physically possible for MY floor to shake like it’s a stampede bc of anyone next to or below me.

Also not sure why on Earth they have to slam every door and cupboard for like 2 hours straight.

  5. Just try to get a roommate who has also lived alone for a fair while. I seem to keep finding ones who have only ever taken out trash or done dishes when mommy and daddy made them; pretty sure these folks would be dead if I stopped tending to the home.

  6. While I lived in an apartment for just 2 years I dealt with all of this:

-2 fires (1 building next to mine litterally burned to the ground)

    -Stolen motorcycle

    -A shooting at my bulding

-A wanted criminal hiding in the apartments for a day

-Animal abuse in the apartment next to mine

-Witnessed neighbors car getting broken into (I have it on camera)

-3 or 4 missing Amazon packages

    -My friend’s car getting towed

    -Poor maintenance with everything

-cockroaches even though they sprayed once a month

-Maintenance people entering my apartment while im in the shower

    -A flood in my building

-Many many strange people knocking on my door late at night

And so so much more. This was at $650 a month in a ~decent~ area.

  7. My upstairs neighbor always stomps around. I tried to imitate it and it was super uncomfortable i think his joints will be shot by the time hes 35. They also sound like they’re dragging furniture across the floor every day. Idk what tf they doing up there

  8. I have lived in two apartments since 2006, and this is so spot on. Noisy neighbours above, next door and under me, lots of sex sounds, people partying often all night, refrubishing late at night, loud arguing, traffic in the street, a nightmare finding a parking spot etc. Solution: I have just bought a house near a forest with no neighbours close by. Moving in the beginning of March. I can’t WAIT to get out of here.

  9. I lived in one apartment where there was a hefty gal above us and every 15 minutes or so, I shit you not, she would run from the living room to the fridge. The apartments were all the same configuration, so I knew that’s what it was. She was grabbing snacks during commercial breaks.
