NEW ULM — In the first period, the New Ulm girls’ hockey team fired 23 shots on goal but had only one goal to show for it.
However, the Eagles responded and scored four times in the second period and held on to defeat Fairmont 7-0 in a Big South Conference game on Tuesday at the New Ulm Civic Center.
Molly Scheid led the Eagles with four goals. Julia Helget scored a pair of goals and Maddi O’Connor also scored a goal. New Ulm outshot Fairmont 64-3 in the game, including 26-0 in the second period.
Scheid scored New Ulm’s lone goal in the first period after the Eagles outshot Fairmont 23-2 in that stretch. The goal was unassisted. While it was frustrating having only one goal at that point, the coaching staff got their message across to the Eagles.
“The coaches talked to us and said we need to capitalize on our shots and make them harder at the net,” Scheid said. “I think we started moving our feet more [in the second period] and passing the puck better and actually capitalizing on our scoring opportunities.”
Up 1-0 after one period, O’Connor scored on an assist from Julia Helget and Brooke Arneson just 34 seconds into the second period. Less than a minute later, Scheid scored her second goal of the game to make it 3-0. Scheid’s second goal was assisted by Alexa Steffl and Jayda Helget.
Julia Helget scored at the 3:55 mark in the second period on an assist from O’Connor and McKenna Strong to put New Ulm ahead 4-0, and Scheid scored her third goal on an assist from Jayda Helget to put New Ulm ahead 5-0 after two periods.
Julia Helget’s power play goal can off an assist from Steffl to make it 6-0, and Scheid scored a late goal for the final 7-0 margin. Morgan Klein and Jayda Helget assisted on the final goal.
Ava Brennan had three saves for the Eagles.
New Ulm (7-4) hosts Waseca on Tuesday.
