A sustainable deficit – surplus example. While a IIFYM / CICO approach is the most easiest and preached prescription for “Fatloss / musclegain” you should never forget about the fundamental patho physiology of the human body and environment.
Fundamental variables for long term health are much more important such as sleep, circadian, meal timing impacting the previous too, quality of food, stress, nutrient deficiencies etc.
Simply put, You can not count calories whilst you think you are being attacked by a tiger 🐅.

These 2 meals are examples of nutrient dense foods. They look extremely similar with the same amount of volume of food.
The only variables changed are:
Deficit:
Less = 1 egg + 1 slice sourdough bread + 1/2 avocado.
More = 1/2 orange + handful of Kale

Increasing the volume of nutrient dense foods is a fundamental tool when on a calorie deficit. Allowing for more abundant supply of nutrients to offset the energy aspect.
