An official message from the French fashion house Chanel to members of the press as well as the advertising industry was published yesterday in WWD. In it, the company asked them to abandon comparisons of other brands with Chanel – they recommend using the brand name only if it comes to the French brand directly.
The word "Chanel" should be used only when it comes to Chanel fashion house products, including clothing, jewelry, perfumes, cosmetics, skin care products, accessories and watches. For example, a jacket is not a "Chanel jacket" if it is not of our production. We care about protecting our brand, and therefore we will be very grateful if you refuse to use expressions such as "in the style of Chanel", "similar to Chanel" and so on,
– the letter says.

Representatives of the brand also pointed to the legal side of the issue – the name Chanel is a registered trademark in the United States and other countries, which means it can only be used in relation to goods produced by a fashion house.
