Would you know how to spell “koinonia” just by hearing it? 14-year-old Karthik Nemmani did – it’s the word that won him the Scripps National Spelling Bee on Thursday. The Texas teenager also successfully navigated through words like “aver,” “paucispiral,” “ankyloglossia,” and “haecceitas” during the 18-round competition. He won $40,000 in cash, a trophy, encyclopedias and $2,500 savings bond. (And if you want to know what “koinonia” actually is, it’s defined as “intimate spiritual communion and participative sharing in a common religious commitment and spiritual community.”) Photo by Chip Somodevilla/Getty Images
