October 2 to October 9

While War, with its first-week earnings, is galloping at the box office, Hollywood film Joker also has its foot firmly grounded at the box office. Hrithik Roshan and Tiger Shroff’s film War has turned out to be the biggest opener of 2019 till date. It will soon surpass the lifetime business of Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s film Kabir Singh (Rs 267.29 crore till Day 29), bringing its total box office collection in the Rs 300 crore.

On the other hand, Joker, starring Joaquin Phoenix in the lead, is continuing to do good business, despite War in competition. Even though Joker was released in only select metro cities and that too, only in English, the Joaquin Phoenix-starrer is still minting money at the ticket windows. This is mainly because of Phoenix’s promising performance as the villainous clown and the hype that it generated on social media. After all, it is the origin story of DC’s most iconic villain, Arthur Fleck.

Coming back to War, the Siddharth Anand directorial venture is pulling audiences to the theatre simply by virtue of Hrithik and Tiger’s camaraderie. Their chemistry worked like a charm. Add to that 2-hour-34-minutes of pure action and you have yourself the biggest action-entertainer of 2019.

The jaw-dropping fight scenes showing Hrithik and Tiger pitted against each other in the film was a cherry on the cake.

Here’s the overall box office collection of War and Joker in Week 1:

Film: War; Director: Siddharth Anand; Cast: Hrithik Roshan, Tiger Shroff and Vaani Kapoor.

The holiday season turned out to be the biggest boon for the Hrithik and Tiger-starrer. Released on the occasion of Gandhi Jayanti, War also witnessed an increase in its earnings because of the extended Navaratri and Dussehra weekend in its first week. Now, it has hit a double century by earning a total collection of Rs 228.55 crore at the box office (overall), which includes Tamil and Telugu (Rs 9.3 crore) along with Hindi (Rs 219.25 crore).

On Day 1, War had “set the box office on fire” by crossing Rs 50 crore. It entered the Rs 100-crore club on Friday. The Rs 125 crore, Rs 150 crore, Rs 175 crore, Rs 200 crore, Rs 225 crore milestones came on Day 4, Day 5, Day 6, Day 7, and Day 8 respectively.

It has already surpassed the lifetime box office collection of Salman Khan and Katrina Kaif’s film Bharat in its first week. Of course, Bharat had an additional push, thanks to Eid, which anyway works like a charm for Salman.

Infact, War is already on the third position in the list of highest-grossing Hindi films of 2019. The list includes Kabir Singh, Uri:The Surgical Strike, Bharat and Mission Mangal along with it.

Film: Joker; Director: Todd Phillips; Cast: Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro.

Joker, directed by Todd Phillips, is slowly inching towards the Rs 50-crore club at the box office. The total box office collection of the film till Tuesday was Rs 32.7 crore.

According to early estimates, Joker saw a decline in its earning on Day 8 as it made approximately Rs 3 crore on Wednesday, bringing its total box office collection to Rs 35.7 crore. Despite two major films – War and Sye Ra Narasimha Reddy – released on the same day, Joker had a decent business in Week 1 in India.

It is to be seen if it will attract more audience in the theatres as compared to its first week.
