The first statue of a woman in Britain’s Parliament Square has been unveiled. It honors suffragist leader Millicent Fawcett, who campaigned for women’s right to vote at the turn of the 20th century. She holds a banner reading “Courage calls to courage everywhere,” words taken from a speech she gave after the death of fellow campaigner Emily Wilding Davison. The statue comes after almost 85,000 people signed a petition from feminist activist and journalist Caroline Criado Perez, calling for a monument to a woman in Parliament Square.
