Spotswood Girls Varsity Soccer Players Earn Division And Conference Honors

SPOTSWOOD, NJ – The Spotswood High School girls varsity soccer team had a stellar season this fall. Spotswood was the last Greater Middlesex Conference team to drop a game in 2019. The Chargers went on a 12 game unbeaten streak to start the season and finished with a 14-4-2 overall record. Spotswood finished second in the Greater Middlesex Conference Blue Division again this year behind Wardlaw-Hartridge and Metuchen High Schools who shared the title. Four Chargers earned All-Blue Division honors this season and one garnered an All-GMC nod.

Sophomores Kirti Craig and Mandee Mendez, junior Julia Masucci and senior Randi Wells all were named to the All-Blue team. For Wells, it was her third year in a row. Craig and Masucci both made All-Blue for 2018. Masucci was also named to the all-conference team behind her 11 shutout, 174 save season. The Spotswood native started every game in goal for the Chargers.

“A two-time All Blue Division player, Julia kept teams off the scoreboard in games where we definitely should have given up goals,” said Spotswood High School girls varsity soccer coach Michael Reid. “Her ability to control the box, play out of the back and be a positive, vocal voice in games shows why she was unanimously named to the All Blue Division team and All Conference team by the GMC coaches.”

Well, a defender had one assist this season and also served as a leader on and off the field.

“Randi is a captain and a three-time All-Blue Division player as a center back,” Reid said of Wells. “She is a fearless defender and embraced the challenges of defending top forwards from the opposing teams.”

Craig made the Chargers’ varsity as a freshmen. The midfielder netted 17 goals this season and notched 14 assists.

“A two-time All Blue Division player, Kirti controls a lot of the play as a center midfielder,” Reid said of Craig. “Her ability to be unselfish on the field and get the ball to players in good scoring positions while also scoring goals makes her one of the top midfielders in the area.”

Fellow sophomore Mendez also had 17 goals and 14 assists for the Chargers. The pair often assisted on each others goals.

“Mandee had a breakout season as an attacking player while leading the team in points,” Reid said of Mendez.  “Her position change from midfield to forward created matchup problems for opposing teams.”

Spotswood High School will hold its annual Fall Sports Banquet on Wednesday, November 13 at the Spotswood High School Gymnasium at 6:30 p.m.
