BLUFFTON — Liberty-Benton grad and Bluffton University freshman Sammy Shardo had a record-breaking weekend as the Beavers’ women’s basketball team won both of their games in the McDonald’s of Bluffton Holiday Classic at the Sommer Center.
Shardo buried a school-record seven 3-pointers and scored 21 points in Bluffton’s 77-38 win over Cairn University on Saturday. She added two more 3-pointers Sunday and had 10 points in the Beavers’ 70-54 win over Westminster.
On Saturday, Shardo set the record on only nine attempts from beyond the arc — all in the first half — with four made in the first quarter and three more in the second. She didn’t attempt a 3-pointer in the second half as the Beavers led 45-12 at halftime.
Brianna Gillig added 10 points for Bluffton.
Dakota Hitchner had 20 points for the Highlanders (0-10).
In Sunday’s win, T.J. Mills had 22 points to lead Bluffton (8-2). Gillig had 15 points and eight rebounds.
Alazia Greaves’ 14 points led Westminster (10-2).
BU men go 1-1
BLUFFTON — Bluffton University’s men’s basketball team went 1-1 with a 70-50 win over Otterbein on Saturday and a 60-53 loss to Baldwin Wallace on Sunday in the McDonald’s of Bluffton Holiday Classic at the Sommer Center.
Four players reached double figures on Saturday as Andrew Renner led the Beavers with 14 points and seven rebounds. Jameel Cosby added 13 points, while Jerred Kinnaird and Isaiah Taylor had 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Dallas Patrick scored a game-high 18 points for Otterbein.
Renner’s 17 points and 11 rebounds on Sunday led Bluffton (5-5), with Taylor chipping in 10 points. Aaron Rich added seven points and 10 boards.
Luke Schaefer’s 10 points led a balanced Baldwin Wallace (6-4) team.
ONU women win
DELAWARE — Ohio Northern University’s women’s basketball team had 12 players enter the scoring column Sunday as the Polar Bears rolled past Manchester 76-47 on the first day of the Ohio Wesleyan Invitational.
Alissa Stahler (13 points) and Brynn Serbin (12) led Ohio Northern (7-2) in scoring, with Stahler and Martrina Parks both snatching a game-high nine rebounds. The Polar Bears used a 20-6 second-quarter advantage to take a 36-20 halftime lead.
Hannah Lindsey’s 17 points, including five 3-pointers, led Manchester (4-5).
Ohio Northern will take on Ohio Wesleyan at 3 p.m. today.
Polar Bears top Spalding
SPRINGFIELD — Four Ohio Northern University men’s basketball players scored in double figures Sunday, and the Polar Bears jumped ahead 39-20 after the first half and picked up a 79-52 win over Spalding on the first day of the Wittenberg Kiwanis Holiday Tournament.
Thomas Phillips tallied game-highs of 14 points and seven rebounds for Ohio Northern (4-5). C.J. Napier added 13 points, while Austin Allemeier and Landen Long both chipped in 11 points.
Jaiquan Edwards (12 points), Marcus Montgomery (11) and Braden Warren (10) led Spalding.
