Tuesday marks the 178th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Waitangi between the Maori people—New Zealand’s indigenous people —and the British Crown. The agreement secured British sovereignty over New Zealand and granted the Maori population the same rights and privileges as British subjects at the time.
