Game of Thrones veteran Dean-Charles Chapman (King Tommen Baratheon) is in the spotlight lately. The young actor is starring in 1917, a World War I epic that, for my money, is the odds-on favorite to win Best Picture at the Oscars this Sunday.
Chapman isn’t up for Best Actor or anything, but there’s still a chance he’ll be up on stage with the rest of the cast and crew, which is fun. We’re pulling for you!
Anyway, that also means Chapman has been out there talking up the movie, as per example during a guest spot on Late Night with Seth Meyers, where he discusses his family connection to the Great War, his burning wish to meet Robert De Niro, and the time a Game of Thrones fan came up to him and informed him that he’d like to punch him in the face. Watch below!
So when Game of Thrones fans talk to Chapman, are they pleasant or confrontational? “A bit of both, to be honest,†the actor remembered. “I think with Tommen a lot of people have mixed emotions about him. Nine times out of 10 people like him, you know, think he’s cute, sweet, innocent. But then I had this one guy who came up to me and was like, ‘I just want to punch you in the face.’ And I was just like, ‘Thanks.’â€
“But yeah, it’s just amazing that fanbase,†he added, which I feel like is a clarification that needs making after telling that story. What about Tommen would make you want to punch him in the face, anyway? Maybe right after he joined up with the High Sparrow and stripped Jaime of his position on the Kingsguard? Yikes, that kid never had a chance.
Anyway, 1917 is in theaters now. Wouldn’t it be a kick Chapman was the first of the younger Game of Thrones actors to make it on the Oscars stage?
