Unlike Saturday’s outage, which appears to have occurred at a Con Ed station on the west side of Manhattan, the earlier calamity came when a bolt of lightning struck a power station in Buchanan, Westchester County, on July 13, 1977. Another lightning strike in Yonkers caused further strain on the power grid already taxed by a city’s worth of air conditioners running full-blast on a steamy night.
