Lipinski backs repeal of medical health insurance tax

U.S. Rep. Dan Lipinski, D-Western Springs, voted in favor of repealing a 40% tax on some employer health insurance plans enacted by the 2010 Affordable Care Act.

Lipinski voted to repeal of the tax, which would have gone into effect in 2022, as a way to help working families, according to a news release. He said it would hurt workers with “robust” health insurance plans.

“For too long the looming 40% tax on health benefits has been a thorn in the side of working families, including laborers, operating engineers, carpenters, pipefitters, painters, plumbers, ironworkers, transportation workers, firefighters, police and others who have fought for and won quality health benefits, oftentimes through collective bargaining agreements,” Lipinski said in the release.

Lipinski said the ACA, sometimes referred to as Obamacare, had positive effects but also flaws, and added that the more than 181 million Americans who depend on employer-sponsored insurance plans have already been affected as providers raise deductibles and out-of-pocket costs to avoid the looming tax.

He also lauded the new House rules, which allow for popular bills to be brought to the floor for a vote.

“I am glad to see the rules changes we helped implement to break the gridlock in Washington are bearing fruit,” Lipinski said in the release. “This helps open up the legislative process to more bottom-up policy making and gives Congress a greater opportunity to get things done for the American people.”
