RALEIGH, N.C. — Realtors and insurance agents are being told at the North Carolina Department of Insurance Conference to remember: “If it rains, it could flood.”

  • The Department of Insurance is training people on how to better inform you about your coverage.
  • Only 10 percent of homeowners are insured, and they dont think that’s enough.
  • Even if you’re not in a floodplain, maps are now being redrawn.

The Department of Insurance is training people on how to better inform you about your coverage. They say only 10 percent of homeowners are insured, and they dont think that’s enough. Even if you’re not in a floodplain, maps are now being redrawn.

“There are some maps in preliminary status currently. Some of them are going effective pretty soon. SOme of them need to be re-mapped and some of them are in preliminary stages of being re-mapped,” says Jerry Frye from the Fema Insurance Group Supervisors.

Once you buy flood insurance, it won’t go into effect for thirty days. That means if you know a name storm is coming, it’s probably too late. Agents encourage you to buy sooner, rather than later.
