new Delhi. 49 celebrities wrote a letter to Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Tuesday. These include celebrities like Ramchandra Guha, historian Konkona Sen Sharma, filmmaker Shyam Benegal, Anurag Kashyap and Mani Ratnam. All wrote in the letter – "Jai Shri Ram" has become a slogan for inciting violence this time. Mobs lining is happening in its name. It's tragic. Urgent action should be taken on these matters.

840 incidents of harassment against Dalits in 2016: Report

  1. According to the letter- Lynching on Muslims, Dalits and other minorities should be stopped immediately. According to the reports of the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB), 840 incidents of harassment against Dalits took place in 2016. However, the percentage of punishment given to the culprits of these cases has come down.

  2. According to the letter- 254 incidents were reported on the basis of religious identity from January 2009 to 29 October 2018. It killed 91 people and 579 people were injured. About 62% of the cases against Muslims (14% of the total population), 14% of cases against Christians (2% of the total population) were registered.

  3. 'Such attacks increased by 90% after May 2014'

    Addressing the Prime Minister in the letter further said that since your government came to power since May 2014, 90% of the attacks against them have been registered. You condemn the events of mobs lining in Parliament, which is not enough. The question is, what action has been taken against such criminals?

  4. It was written in the letter – those incidents should be pronounced as non-bailable offense and sentenced to immediate punishment. If there is a death sentence for death without parole in case of murder then why not for lining? This is a very heinous crime. Citizens should not live in the shadow of fear.

  5. "Jai Shri Ram" became a weapon – Letter

    He wrote – "Jai Shri Ram" has become a weapon these days. Mobs lining is happening in its name. This is shocking thing. Most violent incidents are happening in the name of religion. This is not a Middle Ages. In India, Ram's name is sacred to many people. Attempts to defile it should be stopped.

  6. According to the letter- people should not be called 'anti-national' or 'urban Naxal' or should oppose them in the name of opposition to the government. Article 19 protects the freedom of expression. Sharing disagreement is a part of it.
