Manchin introduces invoice to increase FEMA flood insurance coverage

CHARLESTON, W.Va. — U.S. Sen. Joe Manchin, D-W.Va., announced Thursday he has introduced legislation that would extend the flood insurance policy provided by the Federal Emergency Management Agency.

The legislation, the Group Flood Insurance Policy Extension Act, comes following a delay of $106 million in block grant funding.

People impacted by the June 2016 flood applied for the policies. Manchin said in a statement if the bill is not passed, around 550 West Virginian households will lose flood insurance assistance in August.

“Cutting off West Virginia families from flood insurance assistance would burden many families who are still recovering and repairing from flood damage,” he said. “We need to make sure these hardworking West Virginians don’t lose this important assistance and I will fight to pass this bill.”

Manchin wrote to acting FEMA administrator Peter Gaynor in April about extending the insurance policies for those affected by the flood.
