There is nothing at all wrong in using an adjustable spanner, as long as it is used correctly.
When it is properly adjusted it fits the nut exactly, closer than a fixed spanner can.
I'm not an expert, just a household user, but I heard that adjustable wrenches are a no-no for this operation.
