Summit Firefighters Go to Youngsters In Hospital On Christmas Eve

SUMMIT, NJ — It’s not easy being a kid in the hospital on Christmas Eve — but the Summit firefighters (and Santa) have come to the rescue for 31 years in a row. On the morning of Dec. 24, the Summit Fire Department and its FMBA Local 54 members contacted the pediatric floor of Overlook Hospital to determine how many presents were needed for kids who’d been admitted to the hospital. Then, they set to work.

The firefighters shopped for presents, wrapped them, and escorted Santa Claus (firefighter Tom Murray this year) to the hospital to spread some joy.

“The Summit Fire Department appreciates the doctors, nurses, and medical center staff who help to make these special holiday visits possible,” explained Fire Chief Eric Evers. “Summit FD has been participating in this event for the past 31 years, and it is a highlight of the holidays for us all.” For more information about the Fire Department, see
