The former Secretary of Public Security of Mexico Genaro García Luna was arrested on December 9 in the United States and accused of helping the Sinaloa cartel "operate with impunity" in exchange for millionaire bribes, the prosecutor for the eastern district of New York, Richard Donoghue.
García Luna was accused in the federal court of Brooklyn of three crimes of conspiracy to traffic cocaine for helping the Sinaloa cartel send tons of drugs to the United States in exchange for million-dollar tops between 2001 and 2012, and another crime for making false statements in 2018, the prosecutor said.
But it is not certain that he will be tried in New York: the Mexican government announced Tuesday that he will request his extradition.
