New Mac Professional Working

I just got my new Mac Pro via UPS this morning, and have been playing around with it all day. The photo will trigger some folks:

The UpLift desk shown here is one of their corner versions, and is what I sit at when I:

Left to right:

  • Macbook Pro 15,1: 2.6GHz Core i7, 16GB RAM, Radeon Pro 560X. This belongs to my employer. It’s normally connected to the two CalDigit Thunderbolt-3 docks that you can see in the photo. Those give the laptop its power, access to the keyboard and mouse, and access to the…

  • Three 27″ 4K displays: The two on the flanks are LG 27UK650-W panels, while the center one is an Asus PG27UQ. The latter of those runs at 4K/144Hz when it’s powered by my PC (the … beast … on the far left). Otherwise it’s running 4K/60Hz like the other two. The Asus only has a single HDMI input, so I have a push-button HDMI switcher that lets me change it between the laptop and the Mac Pro as I’ll rarely be using both at the same time.

  • New 2019 Mac Pro 7,1: 16-core, 32GB RAM (upgraded to 96), 1TB drive, and Vega II GPU. I added a 4 x USB 3.1 PCI card for more type-A ports, and then I added … uh… some storage. Two old Samsung 850 2TB SATA SSDs striped into a 4TB volume (can you believe that’s the slow volume?!). I also have 2 HighPoint SSD7101A-1 PCI-E cards w/4 Samsung 2TB NVMe drives each. The NVMe drives are all RAID01’d together into an 8TB drive.

  • (Under the Mac Pro) Mackie DL32R digital mixer. I use it for a bunch of “fun” stuff and am something of an audiophile. I like having a mixer that lets me direct where what sound is going, etc. It gives me lots of flexibility. I used to use it while streaming to Twitch/YouTube, but have long since given up on that. Now I just use it to manage sound input/output for the three computers in the office. The iPad you see under the left-most panel is what controls the Mackie; you can sort of see the console on it.

  • Gaming PC: the specs for that rig are listed here. I used to edit and play games on it, but have since moved all non-gaming stuff to the Mac. In fact, a few days ago I completely reformatted the PC and only installed a few games on it. Nothing else.
