We are getting an idea this morning of the gravity of the financial toll of the wildfires in Australia.
The Insurance Council of Australia says insurance claims so far have come in at $485 million U.S. dollars.
The Australian government has also committed an extra $1.4 billion towards recovery.
Cooler weather and desperately needed rain is giving firefighters a chance to shore up defenses.
The fires have been fueled by drought and the country’s hottest and driest year on record.
The flames have been raging since September.
The death toll has crept to 25 and the fires have destroyed 2,000 homes.
