Child & Adolescent Psychiatry – Hospital Care

For Children in Crisis

CHA has two units at CHA Cambridge Hospital to help children with serious or acute mental health needs:

Child Assessment Unit (CAU): Ages 3-12, 3 beds
Adolescent Assessment Unit (AAU): Ages 13-18, 14 beds

We work closely with families, schools, state agencies and community partners to help children in crisis and with complex diagnoses. We serve children from across New England, providing highly compassionate care in a patient and family-centered model.

Your Care at its Best

The Care Team

Our hospital caregivers have a variety of skills to give every child what they need. Teams are led by board-certified child psychiatrists and our amazing nursing staff. Other team members include psychologists, mental health clinicians, social workers, teachers, activity therapists and pharmacists.

The main goals of a hospital stay are stabilization, diagnosis and development of a treatment plan. This is a collaborative process that often includes family members.

When a child enters our units, we immediately try to understand their needs. We want to help them get to a place where they can benefit from treatment, in the hospital and after they leave our care. Most children will be part of therapy groups to learn stress management and problem solving skills. If needed, we can provide treatment for substance use or known mental health disorders.
Each CHA Teen Health Center (in Cambridge, Everett and Somerville) provides safe, age-appropriate mental health services for students in those schools and teens in the community. CHA clinicians work with students, faculty and families to support health by providing consults, medication management and therapy.

Treatment in the Hospital:

  • Comprehensive evaluation
  • Medication management
  • Family treatment and guidance
  • Occupational therapy
  • Group therapy
  • Individual therapy

Every child leaves our care with an individual treatment plan. Ongoing treatment may include individual, group or family therapy and/or medication.

Help for Siblings

When a child has a mental health crisis, it impacts the entire family. That’s why we provide support services for brothers and sisters of our hospital patients.

Sibling support services are for kids ages 5-18. Activities include education, games and peer discussion. It becomes a place to share stories, develop connections and learn coping strategies.

Please ask us about sibling support if you are interested in learning more.
