Paying less for auto insurance? Premiums drop in New Jersey, Philly area

An analysis of auto insurance rates shows the average driver paying $1,460 in Burlington County, $1,603 in Mercer County, and $1,642 in Camden County.

If your auto insurance premiums didn’t drop last year, then it might be time to shop around for a better deal.

The average Jersey driver paid $1,592 for car insurance in 2019, according to an analysis by the car insurance comparison tool Zebra.

That’s $79 — or 5% less — than drivers paid the year before.

Zebra said it studied 73 million insurance premiums collected across the United States.

Michigan drivers paid the most — an average annual rate of $3,096, records show. Maine drivers paid the least — just $935 in annual premiums for auto insurance.

Prices are dropping in Philly region after years of rate hikes, explained Nicole Beck, Zebra’s communications director.

“After watching rates climb 43% since 2011, Philadelphia is one of the few metro areas that didn’t see rate hikes in 2019, despite population growth and low gas prices creating more congestion on local roadways,” said Beck.

What you pay for auto insurance is generally driven by four factors — what you drive, where you drive, and who you are, Beck explained. Among those personal factors, you can pay less with a higher credit score. You can also save money through bundling auto insurance with a home or rental insurance policy.

Rates vary by the county where you live. For example, the average driver in Burlington County paid $1,460 in 2019, Zebra reported. Rates averaged $1,603 in Mercer County and $1,642 in Camden County.

In New Jersey, 11% of drivers lack auto insurance, estimates the nonprofit Insurance Research Council. That’s not good, but other states had far more uninsured drivers on the road. Among them, Mississippi had the greatest figure — 28% — with no auto insurance coverage.

Last year, Zebra released a similar report with national auto insurance rates broken down by gender and ZIP code.

Records showed men driving in New Jersey paid $1,671 in premiums in 2018 while women paid $1,710 for auto insurance.

Willingboro ZIP code 08046 paid the most. The average driver there spent $1,734 on auto insurance.

Drivers living in nearby Delran and Moorestown paid about $200 less per year for coverage.
